Gold Logie winner Waleed Aly has long been heralded as a prominent journalist famous for calling out people on their false statements.
However, The Project presenter has now come under fire for allegedly misquoting minister for immigration and border protection Peter Dutton.
Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop called out Waleed for, she says, falsely quoting Peter when she appeared on the Channel Ten news panel show this week.
‘I want to ask you whether or not you think Peter Dutton was wrong to say Malcolm Fraser should not have let Lebanese Muslims into Australia in the 1970s?,’ he asked the politician.
Julie was quick to respond: ‘Well that’s not what he said.’
The controversy created an instant buzz on social media, with Waleed haters crowing about his supposed humiliation, while others taking Bishop to task over the finer points of her arguments.
‘He was talking about the situation years ago where we didn’t provide the kind of support and services to people coming in to Australia that we do today, and that can have consequences. And that can have consequences.
‘The point is that today we provide significant resources, support services, to help people integrate, particularly those who come on refugee and humanitarian visas who may have come from very traumatic backgrounds
‘We ensure that they have the support so that they can become contributing members to society.’
