For 47 years the family of missing toddler Cheryl Grimmer never gave up hope of finding out what had happened to her.
Now, after a breakthrough in the cold case – a 63-year-old man is set to face court today after being charged with the three-year-old’s murder in Wollongong in 1970.
The man, who had been living in Victoria under an alias, was extradited to NSW on Thursday afternoon.
He has been accused of abducting Cheryl from a Fairy Meadow Beach shower block near the surf club on January 12.
Police have since revealed that the girl – whose three brothers and mother, Carole were just metres away at the time – died within an hour of being taken.
Detective inspector Brad Ainsworth said the offences were “quite horrific.”
The accused man, who would have been 16 when Cheryl disappeared, was “one of many persons of interest that were interviewed at the time,” Det Insp Ainsworth said.
