Struggle Street shock: new season set to be more controversial

The series which was labelled 'poverty porn' returns next year

SBSs three-part series Struggle Street was a huge source of controversy when it premiered last year.

And in 2017, the fly-on-the-wall show, which was described as poverty porn by commentators, will return with an even longer and more contentious season.

After being set in the Mount Druitt region west of Sydney, this time filming has taken place in Sunshine in Melbourne and Inala in Brisbane. TV sources have suggested that viewers will be confronted with examples of poverty and disadvantage that ‘are like something out of hell’ – with the series shocking viewers out of complacency about social justice issues in Australia.

The new instalments have already hit headlines with local authorities unwilling to give their blessing for crews to film in their councils.

Last month, Brisbane City Council issued a fine of $609 to producers after refusing to provide the production company, Keo Films, filming permits.
