You probably know who Stephen Colbert is. He helped establish the entire genre of satirical news with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, and he’s been the host of The Late Show since 2015.
But behind all of Colbert’s success is a woman that has supported him through the ups and downs. That woman is his wife: Evelyn McGee-Colbert.

Who Is Stephen Colbert’s Wife?
Evelyn (or “Evie”) is an actress and a stay-at-home mum. She graduated with a double major in English and Drama from the University of Virginia in 1985, in the hopes of becoming a performer.
While she hasn’t had the spotlight on her as much as her famous husband, she’s found some success as an actress in her own right. She guest-starred in the finale of the Amazon Prime show Alpha House and has starred in a stage adaptation of Suzanne Berne’s novel, A Crime in the Neighbourhood.
She’s also shared the screen with her husband more than a few times. In her husband’s first big TV show, Strangers With Candy, Evie, strangely enough, played the mother of Stephen’s character, Chuck Noblet. In the 2005 prequel movie though, she got to play a more appropriate role, portraying Chuck Noblet’s wife.
Aside from Strangers with Candy, the Colberts also appeared in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in a brief cameo where the couple and their two sons portrayed hooded spies from Laketown.

When And How Did Stephen Colbert Meet Evelyn?
Oh, now this is one romantic story.
It was 1990. Stephen’s then-girlfriend gave him an ultimatum: either they get married or they break up. And long story short; he quickly realised he didn’t wanna get married to her.
He then ended up at the Spoleto Festival, an arts festival in his home town of Charleston. While he was there, he watched a play, and in the theatre lobby afterwards, he first saw Evie.
It was love at first sight – the two ended up talking for hours, and while they had never really met until then, they grew up just blocks away from each other.
But even with their instant chemistry, Stephen still had his doubts – in the back of his mind he was afraid that she was just being polite to him. So, when Evie turned to talk to another guy for a little bit, Stephen purposely turned his back on her to test her.
Stephen’s line of thinking was that if she kept talking to the other guy, it would be obvious that she wasn’t interested. And if she came back and talked to him then she might really like him.
According to him, it was the most “harrowing minute of his life”.
But when he turned back to her, she was still there, smiling at him. And the rest, they say, is history.
When Did Stephen Colbert and Evelyn Get Engaged?
The exact date of their engagement is a little bit fuzzy, but Stephen probably popped the question sometime during the Spring of 1993.
Their actual wedding, on the other hand, was on October 9, 1993, just a couple of months after they got engaged.

Do Stephen And Evelyn Have Kids?
They do! They have three children – Madeleine, Peter, and John. Madeleine, their eldest, is an alumna of Yale and even used to write for The Politic, Yale’s political magazine. Today, she works for The Atlantic.
However, the two boys have dipped their toes into the filmmaking industry, with John starring in a short and his older brother, Peter, directing one of his own. In addition to that, Peter’s even made an appearance on his dad’s talkshow.
