Scotland Yard officers once investigated claims that a top TV wrestler supplied cocaine to Princess Margaret.
Speaking with the Daily Star, a former Met policeman has revealed that the sensational allegations were “covered up” by bosses to protect the royal’s reputation.
“In came this piece of information that a professional wrestler is providing Princess Margaret with cocaine,” the source said.
“A few of us got quite interested, if not a little excited, about the prospect of dealing with a case that might have royal connections.”
After receiving a tip that the sportsman – whose identity is not publicly known – was dealing drugs to the Princess, the officers began planning ways to hold up the allegations.
“We quickly bounced around some ideas as to how we were going to pursue it,” the source explained.
“We didn’t necessarily see ourselves with our hobnailed boots on, kicking down the back door of Kensington Palace. But she did have a bit of a reputation for being a party princess.”
“A few of us would have been quite amused by the prospect of arresting a royal as her dealer turned up to supply cocaine.”
The officers involved reportedly took their thoughts to Scotland Yard, but the insider believes the investigation was soon halted for fear of the scandal it would bring to the royal family.
“We would work the intelligence up into a package of information and it would then disappear off into the corridors of power for authorisation,” the source said.
“Then we’d go out and do the practical duties – surveillance, tracking their movements – and see if the information was supported by our work on the ground.”
“But this particular piece of information disappeared off down the corridors of power, never to return,” the insider added.
“We never did a day’s work on it after that. There was no explanation at all, it was definitely a case of ‘know your place.’”
Kensington Palace and the Met Police are yet to comment on the claims.
