Hollywood heavyweights Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are locked in a bizarre catfight, which is being labelled the biggest celebrity feud of 2017.
The Oscar winners – and long-time best friends – have fallen out over their TV series Big Little Lies, with Reese accusing Nicole of turning her back on the show.
Despite posing happily for the cameras at January’s Golden Globes, relations had soured by the time the pair appeared at the Oscars – refusing to stand near one another and sending icy stares each other’s way.
At the heart of their tension is Reese’s belief that Nicole was more interested in promoting her role in Lion than their HBO series, which has been a ratings flop in the US.
‘Reese is furious that Nicole hasn’t done more to support Big Little Lies,’ an insider tells Star magazine. ‘All she’s talked about in interviews is Lion. ‘Had Reese known that Nicole would put the show so far on the backburner, she would have cast some random unknown to play Celeste.’
A source adds: ‘You could cut the tension with a knife at the Oscars. Nicole was telling her people to keep Reese away from her – there’s no love lost at all.’
Insiders tell New Idea that this isn’t the first time that Reese, who turns 41 this week, and Nicole, 49, have been at odds, with stress levels running high during filming.
‘They were always all smiles for the cast and crew, but there were definitely some tense arguments during filming,’ says a production source.
‘Nicole could never handle it if Reese was critical of Nicole’s acting, or vice versa. They took passive aggression to a whole new level.’
With the issues building as the weeks go on and Big Little Lies’ ratings continue to slide, it could be the last time Reese and Nicole – whose production companies teamed up for the series – will work side by side.
‘While they have been friends for over a decade, Reese did have her nose out of joint at Nicole’s inability to use the world’s biggest platform – the Oscars red carpet, or the Globes for that matter – to promote the show,’ a well-placed showbiz insider tells New Idea.
