Australian stand-up comedian and actress Rebel Wilson never meant to be funny. Instead, the Pitch Perfect star wanted to be the next Judy Dench.
After her first play, Spurboard, it was clear Wilson was destined to be a comedian.
But if Wilson was going to be funny, she had to be the funniest, she told The Telegraph, London.
When Wilson wrote her first play, she cast herself alongside a girl who was bigger then her.
‘And I was like: ‘Oh. That girl’s getting a lot of laughs, a lot easier than me. What is it?’ Because I don’t think there’s much difference in talent,’ she said.
She adds, ‘I remember distinctly thinking: “I think it’s because she’s fatter”. And then, I don’t know if it was mega-conscious, but I thought: “How can I get more laughs? Maybe if I was a bit fatter…” And then suddenly I was fatter, and doing comedy.’
Wilson lives in Los Angeles and is set to perform in Guys and Dolls for the next two months.
She is also appearing in the film version of Absolutely Fabulous.
