Rebecca Gibney caused a stir earlier this year when she fought back publicly against cyber bullies.
Sick of receiving hateful and hurtful comments on her social media accounts, she hit back in a poignant Instagram post at those who think it’s acceptable to troll her just because she’s a public figure.
As a protective mum to 12-year-old son Zachary, the popular Aussie actor is also acutely aware of the effects of bullying – cyber or otherwise – in children, and has issued a warning to anyone thinking of targeting her only child!
‘I’ve already said to my son, if anyone dares bully you, they won’t want to see me angry! I might be the mother of Australia, but [if] someone bullies my friends or family – look out! Hell hath no fury like a mother whose son is being bullied!’ she laughs.
‘I won’t tolerate it with anyone. I won’t have them doing it to me or anyone else. You can’t let it slide. For me, I had one troll, and that person went away – I feel sorry for people who have countless trolls and are constantly bullied. It’s just a tragedy and I do think we have to stand up against it.’
With so many of us constantly glued to our phones, cyber bullying isn’t the only threat we need to look out for – with potentially deadly radiation from phones also a very real concern.
Sitting down with New Idea at the announcement of her ambassadorship for Lif3 Global, which has developed a life-changing Smartchip and partnered with the Ponting Foundation – donating $1 from every sale to support the cancer research fund – the Logie-winner revealed why she’s so passionate about her latest endeavour.
‘I didn’t even know this technology existed, and the fact that it’s been developed in Australia, it’s ground-breaking in the sense there is no other product like this on the market,’ the actress explains. ‘I use my phone all the time, my son’s on the phone, so many people are on the phone, yet we don’t know the possible long-term impacts on our health.
‘The fact there’s this Smartchip, which is really thin and you can just pop it on the back of your phone and it absorbs 95 per cent of mobile phone radiation and repels it away from your body, it’s extraordinary technology! That alone is something that I’d be interested in A) having on my phone and B) promoting, because I think it’s a wonderful product. The fact that the company is also committed to cancer research for young people by supporting the Ponting Foundation, it’s phenomenal.’
During a press conference at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, Lif3 Global CEO Don Small presented former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and his wife Rianna with a cheque for $50,00 for their Foundation, while pledging a further $100,000 in the next 12 months.
With so many people touched by cancer, Rebecca is passionate about being able to give back in some small way through her involvement with Lif3 Global and the Ponting Foundation, calling the opportunity ‘humbling’.
‘My very dear friend lost her husband actually not so long ago to cancer, and they have a young family. We all know people who have been affected by cancer,’ she tells us. ‘Quite often a lot of these children are in far away places and rural country towns, and they have to come to Sydney or Melbourne for treatment. The families are torn apart, so it’s about supporting those people as well, and the Ponting Foundation has been doing that beautifully. To be a part of something like this, you feel like you’re giving back. Just to be a part of that is really humbling.’
