The 20th of November marked Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillips 71st wedding anniversary, but the royal couple decided to spend the day apart so that the Queen could fulfill her royal duties.

Stepping out solo to honour the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in London’s 150th anniversary,  the 92-year-old monarch – who never shies away from a bold fashion statement – chose to wear a hot pink double-breasted pink coat with matching hat, pearls and a sparkling brooch, topped off with her signature purse and black gloves.

The Queen’s fashion choices are more than just a bright statement, but rather a deliberate choice so that us commoners may be able to spot her from afar.

In the documentary, The Queen at 90, her daughter-in-law, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, said: “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say, ‘I saw the Queen.’ Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen’s hat as she went past.”

Philip, who is 97, announced his retirement from public life in May 2017, carrying out his final engagement in August of that year.

While we didn’t see these two out and about on their wedding anniversary, we can only assume yesterday’s celebrations were as regal as ever inside Buckingham Palace.
