Prince Frederik has issues a desperate plea to his wife Princess Mary, begging her to slow down amid fears that she’s pushing herself too hard with her royal duties.
The heartfelt concerns come amid reports that the busy mum-of-four is pregnant with the couple’s fifth child, as Copenhagen royal insiders reveal that the Danish palace is poised to make an announcement any week now.
But instead of slowing down, the 45-year-old Aussie-born princess has been spotted doing more official duties than ever, attending functions day and night in past weeks.
Recent photos of Mary looking pale and peaky at several royal events sparked Fred, 49, to beg his wife to cut back on her duties.
She appeared to be clutching her belly and closing her eyes on various occasions after one public event, as if she was about to faint and needing a rest.
‘One minute Mary was clapping along and smiling during the presentation, then the next she looked like she was going to faint,’ says one onlooker at the opening of the CPH Garden exhibition.
‘She closed her eyes for the longest time and put her hand to her face like she was overcome and about to faint. Everyone was very worried. Then five minutes later, she discreetly snuck away and sat down. Her minders were fussing over her a little bit, so it was definitely concerning.’
Just a day earlier, during a boat trip with Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan, Mary again seemed unwell, placing a protective hand over her belly as she disembarked from the ship.
The two displays prompted the response from her husband Fred, who’s concerned Mary is pushing herself too hard.
‘Fred knows the pressure that Mary places herself under,’ says the source.
‘Ever since his father Prince Henrik stepped down from public duty in 2016, the writing’s been on the wall that Queen Margrethe will also step down and hand over the reins to Fred and Mary. As a result, she’s been taking on more responsibility and accepting more invitations to official events to try and prove herself to Queen Margrethe.
‘She’s probably the busiest royal in Europe. As well as working, she is also a devoted mother to four children under the age of 12.
‘But the whole thing has Fred in knots. He is begging Mary to slow down and stop taking on so much. We’ve all heard the baby rumours, so that’s got to be a concern for Fred as well. He just doesn’t want her to risk her health.’
