Kerry Taylor Auctions, a vintage fashion auction house in London, revealed that they auctioned two rare pieces from Princess Diana’s wardrobe as part of a ‘Passion for Fashion’ auction.
The auction, which featured a number of collectable vintage fashion pieces, raised more than A$1.62million.
One of the two pieces from Princess Diana’s wardrobe was a tartan dress coat. The coat, which was once dumped at a UK second-hand store, ended up fetching just over A$17,000.
Diana wore the Elizabeth Emmanuel tartan-wool dress coat to Venice in 1985. After receiving very mixed reviews, the piece ended up in a second-hand shop in Hampshire in the UK. Sarah Ferguson’s mother reportedly dropped it off there in 1990 along with several other unwanted pieces.
The other piece from Diana’s wardrobe was a very 80’s puff-sleeved sequined dress. The piece was commissioned by one of Diana’s favourite designers, French-born Catherine Walker. Catherine would often design pieces for Diana just by looking at her schedule. Diana, without even seeing the pieces, would then wear them at special events all over the world.
The glamorous sequin dress sold for over A$155,000. The founder of Kerry Taylor Auctions revealed that both dresses went to a British institution who have asked to remain anonymous,”.
The year 2017 will mark the 20th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death in 1997. It is reported that any exhibitions planned by the buyer of the dresses will wait until next year.
