On the same day British Prime Minister Theresa May was heckled with boos and branded a ‘coward’ after visiting volunteers at a relief centre for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, the Queen and Prince William were met with applause for their decision to visit victims at the Westway sports Centre in White City.
Appearing teary-eyed and emotional, the British monarch and her grandson heard first hand accounts from rescuers, volunteers and victims of the tragedy.
Clearly moved by the horrific event – which so far is believed to have claimed 70 lives, with numbers rising – Prince William described the unprecedented fire as ‘one of the most terrible things I have ever seen’.
While talking to Penny Appeal charity worker Taksima Ferdous, 31, from east London, The Queen said, ‘You have been incredible, please keep continuing,’ and Prince William shook her hand to say thank you.
With the atmosphere turning tense, William promised one distraught resident whose friends’ children are missing: ‘I’ll be back.’
The man had been shouting: ‘What about the children? Queen? Queen? What about the children?’
The 91-year-old monarch’s visit is in stark contrast to that of the PM Theresa May’s behind closed doors yesterday – which Downing Street said was necessary because of ‘security concerns’.
