Viola Davis had her ‘Fences’ co-star Denzel Washington practically crying too as she tearfully accepted the Best Supporting Actress award.
As soon as Mark Rylance announced her name, Viola got up and hugged Denzel and his wife Pauletta, kissed Meryl Street and got a warm congrats from Emma Stone.
‘I became an artist and thank god I did because we are the only profession that knows what it means to celebrate a life. So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.’
With tears in her eyes, Viola singled out her onscreen husband with a heartfelt thanks: ‘Oh captain, my captain, Denzel Washington….’ The actor’s eyes were filled with tears.
Viola continued: ‘My parents, I’m so thankful god chose you to bring me into this world, to my sister… thank you for the imagination and to my husband [Julius] and my daughter, my heart, you and Genesis, teach me every day to live and to love.’
