It’s official: Hollywood loves Australians.
The 2017 Academy Award nominations have been announced and the Aussie’s are leading the charge in a record-breaking year for Australian film.
Mel Gibson has scored a nod for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge with the film also nominated to for best picture, best actor (Andrew Garfield), best editing (John Gilbert) and best sound and sound mixing.
It’s been an exciting few days for Gibson, who welcomed his ninth child over the weekend.
“What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son!” the star said in a statement.
“I’m especially happy for Andrew Garfield, our producers Bill Mechanic and David Permut, our editor John Gilbert and our incredible sound teams. The Academy’s recognition of our film is a testament to every single person who worked on Hacksaw Ridge, and to every soldier who made the sacrifices they made to fight for their country, including Desmond Doss.”
It’s the first time the country has had more than a single nominee for best picture at the Oscars, with Garth Davis’ critically acclaimed Lion also up for the top prize. The emotional tale has recieved five other nominations including Nicole Kidman for best supporting actress, Dev Patel for supporting actor, Luke Davies for adapted screenplay, Grieg Fraser for cinematography and Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann for original score.
In another first, Vanuatu tribal romance, Tanna, is the first nominee for best foreign-language film.
Crowd-favourite La La Land continues to dominate after weeks of acclaim with 14 nominations at this year’s awards.
