Australian film Lion has been the talk of tinsel town after scoring an impressive 6 nominations for the 89th Academy Awards overnight – but now it’s making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

In their haste to capitalise on the Oscar’s nod of approval, the film’s social media team took to the official Facebook and Twitter accounts to post updates on the news of the nominations.

But there was one major error that fans were quick to pick up on.

Instead of receiving credit for Best Supporting Actress for her dazzling performance in the emotional role of Sue Brierley, Nicole Kidman received a snub from a promotional pic.

Instead, it was given to fellow actress and look-a-like Naomi Watts.

The offending post was swiftly removed after fans pointed out the mistake.

But this wasn’t the only awkward incident to happen in the wake of the Oscar nominations being announced.

The Academy Awards website briefly listed the wrong nominees for the Best Actor and Best Actress categories, mistakenly crediting Tom Hanks for his work in Sully and Amy Adams for her role in Arrival.

Soon after removing the names from the official list, ABC Digital released a statement taking apologising for the error.

“This morning, in an attempt to release breaking news as announced, ABC Digital briefly posted inaccurate nomination information on the Oscar.com website. The nominees announced by the Academy on Twitter were accurate. ABC quickly identified and corrected the errors. We apologise to the academy, press and fans for any confusion.”
