In an exclusive interview with New Idea, Father Edward Steiner – who is Nicole’s priest at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville – has spoken candidly about the Aussie’s latest crushing setback, describing her heartache as ‘very emotional’.

The 49-year-old has made
no secret of her deep desire to have another child with husband Keith Urban, revealing: ‘I hope every month I am pregnant… My grandmother had her last baby at 49, so you never know.’

But now the Oscar-winner’s plan to use a surrogate to make their baby dream come true – as they did with their younger daughter Faith, five – has been dashed, with Fr Steiner confirming that such methods are frowned upon by the Church.

The mum-of-four has become more involved than ever in Catholicism since the death of her beloved father Antony Kidman in September 2014.

As a result, Nicole’s been forced to abandon plans to use a surrogate to carry another child for her because of her faith – leaving her devastated.

‘In our tradition, we would say using a surrogate should not be done,’ Fr Steiner tells New Idea. ‘If she were to come in and say: “I’m thinking about this, what about it?” I’d be duty bound to go through all
the Church’s teaching.

‘I’ve been through it with couples and I don’t pretend to understand that need to have
a child, but there are reasons the Church has for what it teaches.’
