Prince Charles spent 14 years in psychotherapy because of Diana’s emotional instability, a new book claims.

Author and historian Sally Bedell Smith says in her soon-to-be-released book, Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, that Diana’s demons emerged on their 1981 Balmoral honeymoon.

Worried Charles asked his mentor, Laurence van der Post, for advice and he recommended eminent psychiatrist Dr Alan McGlashan.

Diana saw him only eight times, but the prince continued to have therapy until the mid-90s.

Sally also writes that Diana’s reluctance to take prescribed medication and keep up with therapy — as well as Charles’ inexperience with dealing with someone with emotional issues — led to their breakup.

Diana initially sought treatment and was prescribed Valium, a drug often used to treat anxiety and depression. However, the author writes that Diana refused to take the drug after she became convinced that the royal family was trying to sedate and control her.

The book also goes on to describe how Charles’ cousin Pamela Hicks claimed that Diana would ‘hit him over the head and keep on with the row while he was praying.’

Bedell Smith also writes that following Diana’s shock passing in 1997, Charles was terrified the public would somehow think he was involved in her death.

‘They’re all going to blame me, aren’t they?’ he asked his courtiers.
