The show may be over, but the pain is still extremely real for Bride & Prejudice favourite Chris, who has been reduced to tears by the ongoing consequences of his parents’ controversial rejection of his wedding to husband Grant. And the drama is only escalating as the rest of the world catches up with the show.
The storm surrounding the family only looks set to intensify, with viral clips of their struggles from Bride & Prejudice picking up steam and publicity around the world over night, after it was featured prominently on such sites as Buzzfeed, which is decidedly Team Chris.
On the other side, Chris’ deeply religious mum Yvonne’s cause has been taken up by notorious conservative activist and ‘troll’ Milo Yiannopoulos, who is rallying his almost 2 million followers to her defence after she was widely slated and vilified on Aussie social media. Now the family suddenly finds itself a battle ground in America’s ‘culture wars’, with pro and anti gay marriage factions battling it out online, in their name.
Chris was an emotional mess after being confronted by vision of his wedding day on TV yesterday – a special time which was somewhat tainted by his Jehovah’s Witness mum ’s uncompromising video explaining why she would not be coming.
‘I’m looking at it again and I’m like, “God dammit look”,’ Chris tearfully said during a post-show interview.
He went on to confirm that he had been holding out hope that his father at least would turn up on the day. Dad Geoff does not share his mother’s religious beliefs, but Chris feels he sticks to her position out of strong loyalty to his wife.
‘You know I thought out of the two — you know we both thought out of the two — the person more likely to come would be dad but, um yeah, they’re a team and that was probably dad supporting mum’s decisions.’
While rejecting her son’s gay life, a tearful Yvonne did express her wish that her son ‘keep well’.
