Her bright and bubbly personality has made her stand out on the new season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. But as Natalie Bassingthwaighte gets to know the other contestants in the African jungle, there is one thing the former Neighbours star won’t be discussing.
For more than 20 years, the singer-actress has been fiercely guarded about her first husband and the details of their marriage.
But breaking his silence about their short-lived union, Natalie’s ex Graham Wilmott, 49, says while things didn’t work out for the pair, he has no idea why Natalie, 41, is so secretive about their past.
‘I don’t know why she won’t talk about it,’ he says. ‘It is what it is. It happened, we were married and now we have both moved on, so I don’t know why she still feels that way.’
It was Natalie who left her new husband to chase stardom in Melbourne just weeks after tying the knot in 1998.
Their lavish wedding, where they were joined by 100 guests at St John’s Church in Sydney’s Glebe, was forgotten when she scored a part in the musical Rent.
‘Before the honeymoon was over, she went off to Melbourne to do her own thing,’ Graham says. ‘She got the job, the musical, and I was left back in Sydney and was working late nights as a chef. I went down to see her twice before it ended, and that was it. There were no massive arguments or anything like that, she had just moved on.’
