He’s not being morbid, but music guru Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum sometimes imagines his own funeral.
‘I want them to put me in that Egyptian sarcophagus I’ve got over there,’ chuckles Australia’s favourite mumbler, who is lucky to be alive after three serious falls.
‘When they carry me through the church, I’ll open the lid, sit up in my coffin and go: “Just one more thing… Can I have another drink, please?”’
At 73, even Molly realises he has to be more careful, following a recent medical emergency on billionaire mate Lindsay Fox’s 80th birthday cruise. In agonising pain, he was forced to abandon the party and fly home from Greece for urgent treatment to his injured spine at Melbourne’s Epworth Freemasons Hospital.
Earlier this year he was severely injured once again, after dodging a tuk-tuk outside a hotel in Bangkok – where he had fled to escape publicity over the hit Molly mini-series.
Between both those misadventures, Molly secretly ‘broke his back’ on another holiday to Thailand with adopted son Morgan, daughter-in-law Crystal and grandson Jason.
‘He tripped over one of Jason’s toys beside the swimming pool,’ says good friend Yael. ‘Of course he never wants to make a fuss, or be “Molly-coddled” as we call it.
