It’s hard to imagine, now, but hugely successful Modern Family star Ty Burrell was once a nervous, naïve and inexperienced budding actor.
And in an essay for the New York Times’ My First Time column, the funny man recounted a cringe-worthy story about his first meeting with an acting agency.
‘I was stuck between a rock and an aneurysm,’ he wrote, when the woman he moved to New York for connected him to an agency.
‘If I’d said no, she would have lost respect for me. If I’d said yes, I’d have to take the meeting.’
The now 49-year-old continued to set the scene, telling readers that in his nervous state, he proceeded to take ‘swift swigs [of water] to cover my tremors’ while talking to the agent.
Walking out of the meeting with the advice that he needed new headshots and to shave his arms, (‘They’re pretty hairy,” the agent noted) Ty was subjected to one more mortifying humiliation.
“I shook his hand, walked out into Times Square and soiled myself,” he recalled. “I stood there for a surprisingly long time before I realised what had happened. ”
Hinting that he may have found sanctuary in a McDonalds’ toilet, the actor concluded:
‘I spotted the golden arches across Times Square the way I imagine immigrants spotted the Statue of Liberty. There I threw my underwear in the garbage. I now had no underwear and, bizarrely, none of the anxiety I had felt mere moments before.’
