There’s only one person who has been driving Betty towards the My Kitchen Rules finish line – her mum Manisone.
Betty – who entered the show with ‘just firend’ David – has been open about her struggles to provide for her mother who went blind when the 27-year-old was a young girl.
However, the model and Instagram star revealed exclusively to New Idea that her mum also battles mental health issues.
‘She’s mentally well at the moment,’ Betty confessed.
‘She’s not taking any medications and hasn’t for the past four months. Me being on this show has helped her so much.
‘It means I don’t have to worry about what medication she should be taking and what doctors she should be talking to. She has been so well and I can’t be more happy.’
Betty said her family helped out caring for her beloved mum while she was filming MKR.
‘It was playing on my mind,’ she admitted.
‘You’re stressed on the show and of course you’re stressed being away from home but then it was so hard not being able to be there for her.
‘I was very fortunate that mum was doing great and that I had uncles and aunties who would call me and let me know she was going ok.’
Betty explained it’s very common for people who become blind to struggle with their mental health.
‘I think the biggest thing for someone who loses their sight is to know that their life isn’t over,’ she reasoned.
‘For her to fight through the mental side of it I found that amazing. Sometimes I look at myself and ask what I’m complaining for.’
