Acclaimed Swedish actor Michael Nvqvist has died at the age of 56.
The star – best known for his roles in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – passed away whilst surrounded by those close to him after suffering with lung cancer for over a year.
His family confirmed the sad news in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.
“Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him,” the statement read.
“His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
Nyqvist enjoyed a successful career in Swedish cinema for over three decades, but soon gained international acclaim after landing the role of Mikael Blomkvist in Millennium, a TV show based on the popular books by Stieg Larsson.
The six-part series was expanded into three feature films: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.
Nyqvist later shot to fame with American audiences after going on to star in Hollywood films such as John Wick and Disconnect.
His most recently worked alongside Gerard butler and Gary Oldman in the Hunter Killer.
Nvquist is survived by his wife Catharina, and their children Ellen and Arthur.
