A Rhode Island man is finally set to reunite with his two daughters after they were taken by their mother over three decades ago in the midst of an ugly custody battle.

Elaine Yates, now 69, fled with sisters Kimberly, then four-years-old, and 10-month-old Kelly in August 1985.

But it wasn’t until recently that the woman, who had been living under the alias Liana Waldberg, was tracked down by authorities in Texas. She has since been charged with two counts of child snatching and could face up to 20 years in prison.

According to the Providence Journal, Yates’ estranged husband Russell, says he was “stunned” to learn his daughters had finally been located alive and well after all this time.

“I always hoped this day would happen and now I hope they will want to get in touch with me. They’re adults now it’s up to them.”

Authorities have said they will not be releasing the names Kimberly and Kelly are now living under. But a police spokesperson has revealed the two women were “obviously surprised” by the news.

It’s understood that police were able to crack the cold case thanks to an anonymous tip two days before Christmas.
