Miley Cyrus has opened up about her sexuality, revealing she spent most of her adolescence confused before realising she was pansexual.
In a new interview with Variety, the 23-year-old says she doesn’t identify as particularly male or female and is attracted to people regardless of their sex or gender.
‘My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality,’ she says.
‘I always hated the word “bisexual”, because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl.’
Currently engaged to Aussie Hunk Liam Hemsworth, 26, the singer says her first experience in the romance department was with a girl.
‘My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade,’ she reveals, adding, ‘My first relationship in my life was with a chick.’
With her sexuality at odds with conservative upbringing, the star says it wasn’t easy coming out to her family.
‘I grew up in a very religious Southern family,’ she says. ‘The universe has always given me the power to know I’ll be OK. Even at that time, when my parents didn’t understand, I just felt that one day they are going to understand.’
