The Danish royal family are regular attendees at the Christmas hunting event, which concludes at Fredensborg Palace – when the bloody takings are splayed on the familys front lawn.

Photos from the day show a beaming Mary, Frederik and Queen Margarethe showing the kids a collection of slaughtered and freshly gutted deer and foxes, which are proudly put out on the grass.

With the kids, both aged 5, looking on, the spectacle has raised eyebrows among animal rights activists.

Given the now well-established link between cruelty to animals in childhood and violent behaviour in adulthood, not only is it insensitive for Prince Frederik and Princess Mary to teach their children that killing animals is acceptable, it’s also a poor parenting decision, says Ashley Fruno, of animal rights group PETA.

While the bloody scene may shock many in Australia, it isnt considered a big deal in Denmark, where the event is a traditional part of the Christmas season.
