Princess Mary stepped out for the annual New Year’s banquet at Amalienborg Palace, her regal exterior and dazzling smile masked the Danish royal’s anguish.
For weeks now, the Tasmanian-born princess has been subject to rumours that 2017 is set to be the year she finally takes over the throne from ailing Queen Margrethe.
But despite persistent gossip, this couldn’t be further from the truth and Mary has made it clear to everyone that there are no plans for the princess to become queen in the foreseeable future.
Despite recent reports of her mother-in-law’s increasing ill health, Mary knows the Queen would never abdicate and is stronger than ever, despite being pictured towards the end of last year looking worn out.
‘The Queen is looking very frail and pale – and that’s got tongues wagging that Mary might have to step up sooner,’ continues the source.
‘Mary’s trying to be calm, but inside she’s desperate to keep things as they are – at least until the kids are teens.
‘Having to take over from an inspirational woman is terrifying to Mary. Truth be told, she’d love to just be mum to her kids for a couple more years.’
