She’s set to make her return to Neighbours 13 years after her shock departure, and now Madeleine West is revealing the real reason she left the popular soap.
The actress states a fear of getting typecast as the reason she walked away from her character, Dee Bliss.
‘I like to think of myself as a character actor and I’d gone into that very dangerous zone for any character actor where you get a bit lazy and you start playing yourself on set,’ she explained to the Daily Telegraph.
Despite producers asking her to stay, Dee famously died in a shock car accident moments after marrying Toadfish Rebecchi, played by Ryan Moloney.
Madeleine has since gone on to o work on a range of TV projects including House Husbands, Fat Tony & Co. and most recently on The Wrong Girl.
In 2005, she married chef Shannon Bennett, and they have six children together. Madeleine also wrote a parenting book, Six Under Eight.
Speaking about her decision to finally return to the role which catapulted her to fame in the early 2000’s, Madeleine went on to explain that until now, the timing had never been right.
‘I was either pregnant or I’d just had another child or I was contracted to another show,’
‘I want to move into writing for film and television so there was an opportunity to take up a writing attachment at Neighbours, which I’ll be doing this year, and also I’ll be doing a directors attachment so it was just the right time to return.’
