Former Beverley Hills 90210 actor Luke Perry has opened up about his close brush with cancer.
In 2015 the 51-year-old actor underwent a routine colonoscopy that revealed he had precancerous growths.
Had doctors not found the growths and removed them, Perry would have been at serious risk of developing colorectal cancer – the same disease that had previously claimed the life of someone near and dear to him.
Now, the former Riverdale heartthrob is sharing his story in the hope that others will be encouraged to get tested.
“If I had waited, it could have been a whole different scenario,” he told Fox News.
Teaming up with Fight Colorectal Cancer’s ‘One Million Strong’ campaign, Perry explains he fell into cancer activism after witnessing his childhood friend Chad lose his wife to the disease.
“I can’t imagine anything Chad would ask me to do that I wouldn’t help him with, so I was happy to jump in and help,” he explained to PEOPLE.
“Once I found out what the numbers were about this cancer – and how detectable it is, and how lethal it is if you don’t detect it – it boggled by mind.”
