Lisa curry has revealed a heartbreaking secret about her childhood.
Opening up to her co-stars on the set of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! the Olympic swimmer confessed that domestic violence had played a big part in her upbringing, leading her to seek refuge from her family life in the pool.
“Probably around the age of thirteen or fourteen we had a lot of domestic violence in our house,” she began.
“I started going to the pool and I just wanted to be at the pool the whole time just to be away from what was happening at the house. I asked my mum if she would drop me off early and pick me up late.”
But despite spending all her time training growing up, the mother-of-three says she has no regrets.
“I used to sleep in my togs, mum never had to get me up, I loved being there. I don’t regret one day, I just had a ball.”
According to the Daily Telegraph, the abusive family member has since passed away.
During the heartfelt chat, the gold-medallist also spoke about learning to swim following a near-drowning incident when she was five, and how at the age of 10 she was scouted by Harry Gallager, the coach of Dawn Fraser.
“He came over and said, ‘Mr and Mrs Curry, Lisa is going to be one of Australia’s fastest freestylers, you better get her teeth straightened because she is going to have her photo taken a lot,’” she told her campmates.
“It really feels like such a privilege to hear people’s stories,” Natalie Bassingthwaighte said following her co-star’s intimate confession.
