Meet Carl, the Sydney dad about to become Australia’s most hated man.
Shock waves will be sent around the nation when he admits to having an affair on national TV and that he ‘never really felt bad about it’.
Taking part in The Last Resort – a new reality show helping couples who are on the rocks – with estranged wife Lucy, the 37-year-old personal trainer is open about the fling he had with a long-term client.
‘She was a friend of mine who I’d been training on and off for a lot of years,’ Carl explains to New Idea.
‘We knew the ins and outs of each other’s lives. I needed a bit of comfort. It was only a one-off thing and then we decided that it wasn’t right and it was a mistake and I didn’t pursue it.’
According to the dad-of-two, he and wife Lucy, 38, had been struggling for years, largely due to her battles with mental illness, which affected her energy levels.
‘In my head, Lucy and I were finished,’ he explains. ‘We were only there for the kids – I didn’t want to walk out on my family.
‘She’s always struggled with mental health issues and that’s something that’s been hard on our relationship.
‘I was worried about her, I cared about her and wanted the best for her but I needed something else, I needed more.’
However, Carl warns viewers not to be so quick to judge him on his actions.
‘I’m a bit worried about how I’m going to be portrayed because I do believe I’m a good person,’ he says. ‘I would never [have an affair] if that relationship was perfect.’
The Last Resort airs Tuesday and Wednesday, 7.30pm, Channel Nine.
