Surfing great Kelly Slater has angered fans of late actor Gene Wilder by posting a picture of his own head on the movie star’s body in a botched online tribute.
Soon after news of the 83 year old’s death, Slater made himself less popular than an empty chocolate wrapper with his peculiar Instagram post.
Many followers didn’t take kindly to seeing the surfer’s head superimposed over Wilder’s image, some accusing him of ‘self glorification.’
‘Unethical mate just stick to surfing,’ responded one user, while others branded him ‘narcissistic’ for preferring to post his own face over that of the popular star, who died on Tuesday.
‘He’s only just died mate very poor taste,’ wrote user simplyjapanesebonsai.
Slater’s followers made it clear they felt offended by the “narcissistic” and “creepy” post.
‘That must have been some seriously good weed you were smoking when you thought this may have been a good idea,” posted Sydneydiggers. “Rip Kelly,” wrote sroberts7d. Ouch!
Unrepentant by the social media storm, Slater explained he’d just re-posted something a fan had shared with him. ‘Simply remembering with humor. I loved this guy. No disrespect,’ he responded.
