Kathy Griffin issued a groveling apology after admitting she ‘crossed the line’ after posing for a photo with a replica of Donald Trump’s decapitated head in her hand.
Addressing her fans via a video message posted to Twitter, the American comedienne begged for forgiveness.
‘I’m a comic. I crossed the line, I moved the line and then I crossed the line,’ she said of the disgusting photoshoot, which was first published by TMZ.
‘I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people, it wasn’t funny.’
Griffin added that she was taking down the photo and planned on asking the photographer, Tyler Shields, to do the same.
The release of the image was followed by a slew of criticism by political figures, including Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr.
‘Disgusting but not surprising,’ he tweeted. ‘This is the left today. They consider this acceptable.’
Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Mr Trump’s 2016 election rival Hillary, also condemned the image, calling it ‘vile and wrong’.
However, photographer Shields defended the image, telling Fox News that he and Griffin were hoping to create a bold message.
‘Kathy and I are friends and we worked together before, so when we started doing this shoot, she said, “I’d love to do something political. I’d love to make a statement,”‘ he explained. ‘We kind of figured out what would be the best image to make out of that.’
Describing the violent image as ‘art’ Shields continued: ‘That’s what art is meant to do. Some people look at it and they love it. Some people look at it and they hate it… I understand there are going to be people that hate this. It’s a very touchy subject… but this is not real. We didn’t kill anybody nor do I feel anybody should be killed. It’s no different from a movie. It just happens to be a still image.’
