Katherine Heigl has spoken of the special moment she told her two adopted daughters that she was pregnant.
In her first interview since the birth of her son, Joshua Bishop, last December, the 38-year-old actress revealed to People that she and husband Josh Kelly waited until she was 12 weeks pregnant before sharing the news with eight-year-old Naleigh and Adalaide, four.
‘I was so relieved to get to share it,’ the former Grey’s Anatomy star said, admitting that the news was a ‘little confusing’ because of their unique family dynamic.
‘[The girls were like], “I grew in your tummy?” And I had to explain, “Well, you didn’t actually grow in my tummy, but your dad and I are your parents,”’ she said.
Katherine’s own older sister was adopted from Korea before she was born, so the actress was prepared with answers to any questions her girls might have about their family.
‘My mother used to say…”It doesn’t matter how they come into your life. The moment they put that child into your arms – whether you just [gave birth] or whether they just arrived from Korea — they’re yours”,’ she said.
Speaking about whether her daughters were aware of ‘how different’ their family looks, Katherine said, for now, the girls are too young to be aware.
I don’t think that even factors into their consciousness at this point. It will as they get older, they’ll be like, “Wait a minute, we all look really different, and what does that mean for me?”’
‘We’re there to support them as parents do. It’s all about open communication and helping them access whatever they need to feel absolutely 100 percent secure in who they are.’
