Kate Middleton and Prince William may be the picture-perfect royal couple today, but back when they wed in 2011 they broke a pretty major 350-year-old tradition.

Over 20 million people tuned in to watch Kate marry Wills in Westminster Abbey, but the nuptials broke a huge centuries-old old tradition; Prince William was the first ever member of the royal family to marry a “commoner”.

According to a new book “The Duchess of Cambridge: How Kate Middleton Became A Future Queen” by Jessica Jayne, Wills was the most unlikely of Royal rebels when he broke tradition and married Kate.

Jayne writes about those who once criticised the decision then, are now eating their words, “All of those who have lambasted Kate and criticised her for being ‘common’ ate their words.”

Jayne continues that it was the benefit of modern times that allowed such a union,“Back in the old days, a commoner marrying into royalty may just be a dream but times have changed, Kate would be the first commoner to marry a prince in 350 years.”

Of course, the Queen still had to give her approval of the marriage – and luckily for us, she did!
