Karl Stefanovic has finally broken his silence about his shock axing from the Today Show last December.

WATCH Karl get candid about his dismissal from Channel Nine’s hit breakfast show and dish on his new wife Jasmine Yarbrough:

Nine’s former golden boy opened up about the sensational sacking at a post-Logies brunch in Queensland this morning, after the 61st annual TV Week Logie Awards went off with a bang at the Star Gold Coast yesterday evening.

Speaking in his capacity as the event’s co-host, the embattled anchor – who is a two-time Gold Logie winner himself – revealed he was “struggling” towards the end of last year when he got word about his dumping whilst on honeymoon with his new wife, shoe designer Jasmine Yarbrough.

“It was good to be back last night. It’s been about six months since I was on the telly, and I needed to have a rest.

“Towards the end of last year, I was cooked,” the axed presenter began.

“It had taken its toll. A lot of the attention – all the unwarranted attention, I thought, and you can’t control any of that.

“I’m not going to complain too much about that, but what it meant was that in a work capacity, I don’t believe for a second I was at my best.

While he admitted his Today axing came as a major blow, the Sydney-based star said it also brought a sense of relief.

“I just wasn’t at my best, and you can’t be doing that show unless you’re at the top of your game. You’ve got to be sharp, you’ve got to be witty, you’ve got to be funny.

“You’ve got to see the angles, and to be honest at the end of last year, I wasn’t seeing much.”

Karl was replaced by veteran journalists Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight who continue to front the breakfast show.

The exit came as Karl’s brother Peter Stefanovic shocked Australian viewers by quitting his longtime hosting gig on Channel 9 to “explore new opportunities”.

Reports from the time indicated he was slated to be dismissed from his Weekend Today presenting slot.

Peter’s wife Sylvia Jeffreys has also since left the Today Show.

More than six months on, Karl is ready to take on a new role as host of the second season of Nine’s hit series, This Time Next Year.

Last night’s Logies saw a star studded array of Australian A-listers walk the red carpet, with the shock win of the night coming as controversial comedian Tom Gleeson bagged the coveted Gold Logie ahead of hot favourite Amanda Keller.
