With the drinks flowing and the ladies fighting for his attention, Karl Stefanovic had never been more in his element than at the Oasis Ball in Perth in April.
Bringing down the house with a series of no-holds-barred jokes as he co-hosted the WA advertising industry event, Karl was the king of the party. And while wife Cassandra was there to dutifully support him, as she has always done, behind the scenes the couple were on the brink of a crisis.
Unable to reconcile his new, high-flying life with the humble one he started with Cass 21 years ago, it was at this black-tie event that pals believe Karl had a revelation – his marriage was over.
‘Karl was the star attraction on the night and all the ladies wanted a piece of him,’ an insider tells New Idea. ‘They were lining up to flirt and get photos with him.’
