Two of television’s biggest stars,

and Karl Stefanovic, are said to be slugging it out over Channel Nine’s highest-profile position – as host of A Current Affair.

Setting his sights on the highly coveted job heading up A Current Affair – a post already held by his colleague – Karl, 42, wants to make the move, having been in ‘closed door meetings with the big bosses’ for months planning the takeover.

And while Tracy, 56, has spent more than 10 years making the presenting role her own, she is now being forced to fight for the job she loves, after hearing that Karl is eyeing off the top seat.

With Karl adamant that he can bring a fresh perspective to the nightly slot, including bigger interviews and more hard-hitting news, he has welcomed official talks regarding the move.

‘Since his split from wife Cassandra, Karl wants a job that fits into normal hours to work around the kids,’ an insider says.

‘It’s a perfect fit,’ a Channel Nine insider says, despite adding that his Today co-stars, including pal Lisa Wilkinson, will be devastated to hear
of his departure.

And as well as being passionate about righting the wrongs of dodgy tradies and informing the nation about the best bargains in the shops, the schedule suits the Walkley Award winner.

‘Tracy can spend the day on her property tending to her horses and dogs before heading into the studio,’ the source says. ‘Who would want to give that up?’

However, with no ‘big interviews’ in months, insiders say the A Current Affair host has obvious concerns about her future.
