John Travolta would like nothing more than to quit Scientology but high-ranking leaders like Tom Cruise are keeping him “hostage,” according to a bizarre report by US magazine The National Enquirer.
The publication reports that the star, 62, has “lost faith” in the religion but that church leader David Miscavige “threatened” to expose some shocking secrets if he leaves.
“Travolta’s more a victim of Scientology than a participant in it these days,” William Franks, a former senior executive with the church, tells The Enquirer. “John was seriously considering quitting. He came to me, desperate and afraid of their threat that everything he ever told them would be revealed publicly if he defected.”
John’s “gay confessions” were recorded during “auditing” and locked away in a vault, and now the church is using the tapes to control the actor, The Enquirer sensationally alleges.
“John pleaded with me, ‘There must be some mistake because I’m being told this is what’s going to happen if I leave,’” William told The Enquirer. “I was a witness to the pressure put on Travolta. He was afraid they were going to reveal his sex life. In the public eye, he was a ladies’ man… and here he wasn’t.”
Tom is friends with Miscavige and takes part in high-level decisions.
“Miscavige and Cruise are incredibly close and respect each other enormously. It’s only natural they make the big decisions together,” a SciTi source tells The Enquirer.
John – pictured here with wife Kelly Preston while schmoozing on the red carpet with journo Richard Wilkins – has not yet responded to the allegations.
