John Heard – the actor best known for playing Peter McCallister in the Home Alone movies – died in a California hotel room after suffering a heart attack.
According to a coroner’s report obtained by PEOPLE, the 71-year-old suffered a “sudden cardiac death due to atherosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease.”
Two days before his passing on July 21, the star went under the knife for minor back surgery at Stanford Medical Centre. However, officials confirm that this did not play a role in his death.
“The manner of death is natural,” the autopsy concludes.
As well as big screen roles in films such as Big and Gladiator, Heard had guest spots in The Sopranos and CSI Miami.
He also enjoyed success on Broadway, appearing in Warp and The Glass Menagerie alongside Oscar winner Jessica Tandy.
Since the tragic news broke, many in the entertainment industry have taken to Twitter to pay their respects.
Heard’s Beaches co-star Bette Midler has remembered him as “one of the best actors of his generation.”
Our thoughts go out to Heard’s family and friends.
