In his first-ever gig as host of The Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel didn’t spare anyone in his opening monologue, dissing Justin Timberlake, Matt Damon, Mel Gibson, Meryl Streep and more.
“Oh, good. I got a standing ovation,” he said as he stepped on stage at The Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night, but then missed the microphone that opening performer Justin tossed to him. “I ruined it already.”
“I hope the guys from ‘N Sync watched it. There’s a good chance they’ll let you back in the band,” he joked to Justin.
Kimmel said he was honored to be hosting the awards show, but added, “The way you people go through hosts, it’ll probably be the last time too.”
Looking at Mel in the audience, Kimmel said: “The country is divided right now but there’s only one Braveheart in this room and he’s not going to unite us either. Mel you look great, I think the Scientology is working.”
Continuing the running joke with Matt Damon, Kimmel said: “I’d like to bring up someone I’ve had issues with – Matt Damon. When I first met Matt Damon I was the fat one.”
He commended Matt for handing over the ‘Manchester by the Sea’ role over to his friend Casey Affleck while ribbing him for choosing to do The Great Wall instead.
Kimmel said he also wanted to thank President Trump. “Remember last year when it seemed the Oscars were racist? Thanks to him!” he joked.
Kimmel also poked fun at Andrew Garfield for losing weight for ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’ “You can barely see him he got so thin,” he said.
The host also teased Meryl Streep and referred to her career as “lackluster” and “mediocre”, and encouraged her to stand up for a standing ovation.
“Nice dress by the way, is that Ivanka?” Kimmel quipped.
