Last night’s episode of the popular series saw loveable Cherie Butterfield, played by Deborah Mailman, make a shock marriage proposal to Martin Clegg, played by veteran Aussie actor Lachy Hulme.

As the characters’ relationship has flip-flopped for some time now, fans were no doubt left shocked when Cherie popped the question to a love-struck Martin while the pair helped celebrate the birthday of Billie Proudman, played by Kat Stewart.

Comforting a sad Martin as he sat with a drink mourning the late Darcy Proudman, previously played by John Waters, Cherie admitted she missed Martin before resting her head on his shoulder.

‘Now the sex is dead, I’m not scared [about being in a relationship] anymore,’ she told Martin.

‘So, Martin Gordon Stuart Clegg, will you marry me?’

A gob smacked Martin failed to get an answer out, leaving fans forced to hold their breaths until next week’s episode.

Meanwhile, Nina Proudman, played by Asher Keddie, was introduced to Harry Crewe, who is being tipped as the show’s new Patrick – a serious love interest for Nina.

Joining St Francis Hospital as its new crisis and culture manager, Harry attempted to reign in Nina and her team’s casual approach to work, after which Nina declared Harry ‘handsome… but annoying’ and a ‘suit without a clue’.
