Arguably the biggest finale of 2016 was the final episode of Foxtel’s Wentworth. The gritty prison drama went out with a bang as the protagonist of the show, Bea (played by Danielle Cormack) was brutally stabbed by fellow inmate Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson in a frenzied showdown.
Fans of the show went into meltdown after the finale aired, sending social media into overdrive. Now, Danielle Cormack weighs in on the reaction.
‘I knew there’d be a very strong reaction to the finale as there should be,’ Danielle explains to New Idea at yesterday’s Aacta awards industry luncheon. ‘Everyone on the show worked very hard to form a spectacular climax. Judging by the response of the show, I think we achieved that so I’m really happy.’
Danielle also commented on the devoted and loyal fanbase the show has formed.
‘It’s one of those things when you’re creative and you’re creating work to be seen as a visual artist, sometimes you don’t want people to see things, sometimes it’s private but other times, it’s for the enjoyment of others to engage people, to evoke a response from them, to move them, to get underneath their skin and I certainly know that Wentworth has done that with the viewers. To be part of that is a job well done by everyone that works on the show.’
Despite the aggressive and bloody attack Bea suffered, many fans still hold out hope that the character will make a miraculous recovery and come back for the next season of the show. So when questioned, Danielle came clean about whether or not she will be returning.
‘No,’ she exclaims, denying any involvenent in the next season. ‘I wish.’
Without Wentworth keeping her busy, Danielle revealed she has an exciting 2017 schedule but, in true industry form, remained quiet on the specifics.
‘Oh, so many secrets!’ Danielle laughs. ‘There’s a lot happening, I’m really looking forward to next year so watch this space!’
