Former Olympian Ian Thorpe has made a candid confession about his body image while reminiscing about his once athletic physique.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph, the 34-year-old admits he doesn’t think he’ll ever be as fit as he was when he won gold for Australia at the 2000 and 2004 Games.

“Unless I am prepared to get 30 to 40 hours of training a week, I will never look like that again in my life,” he said, adding: ”I am OK with that.”

But while he reflects on his career with fond memories, the sportsman admits he has no desire to dive back into the pool.

“I have got a body that’s kind of OK-ish,” he explained.

“If I wanted to lose a little bit of weight, I have like five kilos that I could lose that would be great for my vanity and that is it.”

The swimming champ also opened up about his current workout regime, admitting that retirement forced him to reconsider his approach to food and fitness.

“What I’ve had to adjust to is really what my perception is of what a normal size meal is,” he explained.

“It is really about a third of the size of what I’d consumed before.”

Thorpe also aims to walk 10,000 steps per day and hits the gym five times a week.

“I have a trainer who whips me into shape three days a week and I do three other cardio days by myself but that is six hours a week compared to the 30 or 40 hours I used to do.”

“That is a big difference,” he said.
