Child star Iain Armitage tells New Idea what it’s like to play one of the most beloved characters on TV…
We all know Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, but tell us a bit about Young Sheldon?
Young Sheldon is a boy who is different from everyone else. He is extremely smart, but people don’t understand him and he doesn’t always understand people.
What drew you to this role?
Luck! I enjoy challenges and this seemed like an interesting one. I like how smart Sheldon is – I get to learn a lot of new vocabulary!
Was young Sheldon a difficult character to play?
In some ways, he is, but it’s also so much fun to play him.
What training did you do to pick up all of Sheldon’s quirks?
I worked with Mr Jim and our original director to understand Sheldon. And Mr Steve Molaro is always there to help make sure we are getting everything right.
What was it like working with Jim Parsons?
It was wonderful! He is extremely kind, a lot of fun and we both love theatre!
Did he give you any tips?
He was so helpful at getting me into the mindset of Sheldon and in understanding the world from Sheldon’s point of view. He also let me have a lot of freedom with Sheldon because people change as they get older. Young Sheldon isn’t EXACTLY like older Sheldon.
Would you like to be an actor when you are older?
Maybe. I would also like to be a magician.
