Speaking to Daily Telegraph, House Rules’ Drew Heath discussed the light-hearted feud between him and his fellow judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
It’s no secret that Australian architect Heath and celebrity designer Llewelyn-Bowen often go head-to-head as they study renovations with fellow judge Wendy Moore.
But sometimes, Llewelyn-Bowen’s flamboyant character often leaves Heath overwhelmed and straight up speechless, with the Australian architect even feeling like he’s no match for the over-the-top Brit.
“I had no idea what this television gig was all about,” said Heath, who’s undertaken his first television experience on the hit channel 7 show.
“I was just so incredibly nervous. On my first day I was like a sheep or a cow waiting to be slaughtered. I was just sort of standing in the corner you know, not saying anything. I was saying to myself, ‘come on, I can do this, I can do this, I can do this.”
While Heath admits he found it hard to find his feet onscreen, he credits Wendy Moore for helping him to make the adjustment to TV.
“Wendy was my go-to person. We started and Wendy and I toured some of the houses. She absolutely babysat me. She was fantastic, she was so nice,” said Heath.
“If it hadn’t been for Wendy, if it had been someone who was competitive or not respectful it would have been a nightmare — I probably would have walked out.”
Heath’s not afraid to show his vulnerable side as he admits the mounting pressure to perform onscreen is intense.
“You’ve got to be succinct and witty and intelligent — and all these things. At the same time, in front of cameras, and people, lots of cameras and bright lights. And wearing a suit. I’m a T-shirts and shorts guy,” he explained.
Perhaps the fact that Heath is a more laid-back type from Sydney’s northern beaches as opposed to co-host Llewelyn-Bowen, who’s a fashion-forward and experienced TV professional, is the reason the boys often struggle to see eye-to-eye.
“This is a guy who gets around in three-piece-suits — constantly. He’d even wear one at breakfast. That’s how he is. (It’s this) British-type behaviour,” said Heath.
Heath says that while he and Wendy “mainly agree”, he finds his main point of difference from Lawrence is their eye for design.
“Lawrence is a classicist, he likes things from the past. All origins of architecture are in the past,” said Heath. “I don’t disagree with him on where the origins of design are, I just like to make it more contemporary and of course more Australian. I live here and I design in an Australian environment and I’m hopefully more in tune with that.”
