Goldie Hawn has opened up about her secret hell – the time in her life when she was so overcome by anxiety she didn’t want to leave the house.
The 71-year-old Hollywood legend has told all in a new interview with US magazine People to promote her Amy Schumer mother-daughter caper Snatched, and relived her early days trying to make it in Tinseltown.
‘When I started working, I was really having anxiety,’ she reveals. ‘I remember [movie critic] Arthur Knight gave me the worst [review] and I’ve never forgotten it: “Her performance was as flat as her chest.” It was so mean and getting over some of these things when you have a kindness in your heart is a really hard thing to cope with.’
Goldie says she was very vulnerable and the sleazy casting couch attempts and the relentless go-go-dancing circuit she was surviving on nearly tore her apart. ‘I really didn’t want to go outside,’ she tells People.
‘I really lost my smile, I didn’t feel joyful, I was scared. They were like panic attacks. Your heart would race. The ages between 19 and 24 are sometimes very precarious times for the brain. It’s a rough time for kids; a very vulnerable time.’
It’s not the first time Goldie’s opened up about those dark days. In 1981, Goldie admitted in Rolling Stone magazine she had a full-on nervous breakdown: ‘I was living in L.A., alone for the first time. Suddenly, I was making tea for myself at night and wondering what mattered. I was so upset, I was always throwing up in some bathroom. And then came seven years of analysis, and lots of soul-searching, and lots of honesty, and lots of bullshit. And I eventually came out of it.’
