It was the season finale that broke its own previously-held ratings record.
But far from just breaking records, the super-sized culmination of Game Of Thrones’ sixth series also confirmed many a fan theory when it comes to lead character Jon Snow’s heritage.
As the ‘bastard’ son of the late Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark, Jon Snow – played by fan favourite Kit Harington – finally took back the Stark family township of Winterfell, and the former Commander of the Night’s Watch was recognised as the King In The North.
However, with so many revelations in the final episode leaving many still scratching their heads trying to piece it all together, the show’s US network, HBO, has cleared up once and for all Jon’s true parentage – and the revelation will turn everything on its head come series seven!
While viewers have always known Jon as Ned’s illegitimate son, his mother’s identity has remained a closely-guarded secret… until now!
In the closing moments of the finale, a flashback to the Tower of Joy revealed Jon’s mother to be none other than Ned’s sister, Lyanna Stark!
But before you immediately jump to the conclusion that Jon was the product of incest, think again!
Lyanna sadly died shortly after childbirth, but not before making her brother promise to raise her son as his own.
Though many were able to piece the puzzle together by this stage, for those still catching up, HBO has since confirmed that Jon’s father is indeed Rhaegar Targaryen, who had abducted Lyanna, despite her being engaged to marry Robert Baratheon.
If the Targaryen name sounds familiar, that’s because it is – Rhaegar is Daenerys ‘Khaleesi’ Targaryen’s brother, which makes Jon her nephew! Complicated much?!
