Arrested in the Perth suburb of Canning Vale at around 1pm yesterday, police have charged disgraced AFL star Ben Cousins, 38, with possession of methamphetamine (also known as ‘Ice’) and two charges of breaching a violence restraining order.

Set to appear in Magistrates Court this morning, the former Brownlow medallist was refused bail and held in the Perth Lock-up overnight.

Once a formidable midfielder of exceptional talent, the former Eagle’s captain’s career achievements have been overshadowed by off-field dramas, which include a well-documented battle with drugs that resulted in a stay at a US rehab facility and a 12-month ban from the game in 2007.

More recently he was found in a disoriented state directing traffic on a Perth highway and was taken to hospital for assessment.

Speaking of the star’s downward spiral, West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett says he still loses sleep over Ben.

‘I guess the disappointing thing is we weren’t able to salvage Ben out of the wreck,’ he told The Footy Show earlier this year.

‘I worry (about Cousins) every day. We would like him to be healthy and well and getting on with his life like a 36- or 37-year-old should be doing.’
