She stunned the nation when she rejected her son Chris over his sexuality, but Bride & Prejudice mum Yvonne has a secret past that will leave many people’s heads spinning.
Revealed on the hit reality show to be a strict Jehova’s Witness, Chris’ mum flatly rejected him when he asked her to attend his wedding to partner Grant. When pressed on whether she would take all of her son or none of him, she chose the latter.
So it will come as a shock to many that Yvonne is no sheltered church lady, and is certainly no stranger to gay people, having once lived a much more liberal life before finding fundamentalist religion.
‘Religion gives my mum structure in her life — she found it when she was a bit of a wild child,’ Chris told Kyle and Jackie O this morning.
‘No-one knows this, but my mum actually used to work in gay bars, back in the day.’
Chris said on radio his mum’s former line of work is not directly related to her controversial attitudes, rejecting the hosts’ suggestions she may have seen some confronting 1970s hedonism at play.
‘It’s more so about the beliefs, I don’t know that it has anything to do with what she experienced,’ Chris advised.
Despite their awkward attempts at reunions, Chris says he is still holding out hope of a successful meeting of minds with his parents.
‘Hopefully, [doing the show] was a bridge we could build with my parents, because it would be great to have them there.’
